May 2024

Greetings to members of the Men’s Club, our Sisterhood, and all of the members of our Beth Israel family.

Last month, I wrote about baseball and all of the optimism the new season brings to the authentic fan of the game. We believe this is a new year, and it is, and anything can happen. That’s what life is about! May you be blessed with optimism every day of your life!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 12. I don’t know about you, but I believe that every day should be Mother’s Day. My mother, who died in 1998, was a special woman. As I grew older, I appreciated her more. I thought all women back then, were working all of the time outside of the house. She was a volunteer Democratic Committee Woman, and then she worked full time in Philly’s City Hall for the Democratic Administrations. She also was a School Crossing Guard on Ridge Avenue, outside of Roxborough High School. I didn’t know there were not a lot of women in the work force in the early ‘60s. My father died in 1963, when I was 13, and my mother raised her three sons alone. We were middle class poor but did not know it. Some of my fondest memories of my mother were she took me to Phillies games at Connie Mack Stadium. We clipped Phillies coupons off the outside of Burry’s Cookies packages which gave us kids free general admission to the ballpark. Nice. Knowing I was a big Phillies fan, my mother used some of her “valuable” S&H Green stamps to get me a real baseball bat. This is only a short peek into my great memories of my mother. I am sure you have many
great memories of your mothers to tell as well.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all

Stay Safe and Stay Healthy,
Stephen
