Social Action Committee Activities
January - Meals on Wheels
Beth Israel is currently responsible for delivering Meals on Wheels during the month of January. The co-chairs of this committee begin to solicit drivers to deliver Meals on Wheels at the end of November. Two drivers are assigned each day to deliver in Kings Point and two drivers are assigned each day to deliver in Sun City Center. Two teams of back-up drivers are also solicited.
November - Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
Beth Israel hosted the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service led by Rabbi Carla Freedman, Beth Israel, The Jewish Congregation; The Reverend Doctor Mark Salmon, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church; The Reverend Doctor Timothy W. Shirley, SouthShore United Church of Christ; and Father Lee Miller, Associate Rector, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church.
Chanukah Mitzvah - the congregation collected baby food and diapers for a local food bank - Our Lady of Guadaloupe.
Interfaith Learning - starting on February 12, 2018 Rabbi Carla Freedman and The Rev. Dr. Tim Shirley of South Shore United Church of Christ will teach a 6 week class on "Topics in Christian-Jewish Relations" and will include subjects like: inerrancy of the bible, and what that means today; antisemitism; messianism, etc.
"Feeding the Hungry"
Beth Israel supports the Metropolitan Ministries efforts to feed the hungry at the St Andrews Church in Sun City Center. Beth Israel members volunteer along with other volunteers from area clubs and churches to serve meals on Wednesdays.
