Greetings to members of the Men’s Club, our Sisterhood, and all of the members of our Beth Israel family.
Last month, I wrote about baseball and all of the optimism the new season brings to the authentic fan of the game. We believe this is a new year (for baseball fans) and anything can happen. That’s what life is about! May you be blessed with optimism every day of your life!
This year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11th. I don’t know about you, but I
believe that every day should be celebrated as Mother’s Day. My mother, who died in 1998, was a special woman. As I grew older, I appreciated her more. I thought all women back then, when I young, were working all of the time outside of the house. She was a volunteer Democratic Committee Woman, and then she worked full time in Philly’s City Hall for the Democratic administration. She also was a School Crossing Guard on Ridge Avenue, outside of Roxborough High School. I didn’t know differently back then — that a lot of women were not in the work force. My father died when I was 13, back in 1962, and my mother continued to raise her 3 sons alone. We were middle class poor but did not know it. Some of my fondest memories of my mother were when she took me to Phillies games at Connie Mack Stadium. Knowing I was such a big Phillies and baseball fan, my mother used some of her valuable S&H Green Stamps to get me a real baseball bat. I am sure YOU have many memories of your mother as well.
Thank you to Les Zwain for arranging and taking care of our Men’s Club “Day At The Races”
on April 9th. Some of us lost a little and some of us lost a lot. Personally, I am not a big
gambler, betting only $2 on several races to Show. I broke even.
My thanks to our Men’s Club Board members and Tech Leader Nina Malinak for making our last
Men’s Club Luncheon of the season such a success! We feasted on pizza, soda, and snacks, and we enjoyed a movie called “Sweet Lorraine”, the warmly funny slice-of-life comedy about the last days of a Catskill landmark, the Lorraine Hotel.
The Men’s Club mourns the passing of our good friend and treasurer, Rick Reingold. We will miss you, Rick.
The Board of the Men’s Club has accepted Jeff Beller onto our Board to serve as our treasurer
Stay Safe and Stay Healthy,
Stephen
